1. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling
2. Western Himalayan Mountaineering Centre (WHMC), Manali
3. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi
These institutes are supported by Defense Ministry of India. They offers basic and advanced training program in mountaineering and climbing techniques.
Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is a supreme mountaineering body in India.

Few words about HMI... the institute where I went for Basic Mountaineering Course.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling is one of government run mountaineering Institute in India. HMI owns a training zone Chowri Khang - this is an area restricted from outsiders in Western Sikkim. It is at around 14,500 feet altitude and it takes around 3 days of trek to reach there. Apart from this excellent training zone, HMI also provide world class equipments to all participants, provide training by highly accomplished instructors, and take care of all logistics like transport, food, hostel & so on. Most importantly, they charge extremely nominal for mountaineering course -- the charges are even affordable by students or non-working persons.

DeleteI reside in Mumbai and wish to Summit Everest in a Year or two . Have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, but Everest is another beast, hence wish to enroll into one of the courses of a top mountaineering institute. Of the 3-4 in india. which would you suggest ?
ReplyDeleteI suggest you join Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI). Training at HMI are very rigorous and close to real mountaineering expedition.

ReplyDeleteYou have to apply at least 6-9 months in advance before the course begin. They publish annual calendar of the courses at the beginning of the year on their website.
